The Research Department of Kharadar General Hospital (KGH) is honored to collaborate with esteemed partners such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and Aga Khan University (AKU) on a range of impactful community-based research initiatives. Our work addresses critical public health challenges including rotavirus, typhoid, pneumonia, and other infectious diseases, aiming to improve child health outcomes both nationally and globally.
KGH has played a pivotal role in the introduction and monitoring of the rotavirus vaccine for children in Pakistan. As a trusted WHO research partner, KGH has been at the forefront of rotavirus surveillance, contributing valuable prevalence data for over 18 years. A significant milestone emerging from this collaboration is the planned introduction of a rotavirus vaccine booster dose into the EPI schedule on a pilot basis at KGH, beginning in January 2025. This booster will be administered alongside the measles vaccine at 9 months of age, enhancing protective measures against rotavirus infection.
In another landmark achievement, KGH was the first site in Pakistan where the typhoid conjugate vaccine (XDR) was administered, a historic event led by the esteemed Prof. Abdul Ghaffar Billoo.
These projects underscore KGH’s commitment to evidence-based interventions and impactful public health advancements.
Beyond research, the department is deeply committed to capacity building and education. We play an integral role in training students in research methodologies, and we actively collaborate with the School of Nursing, contributing as part of the teaching faculty. Our team consistently fosters student engagement in research projects and scholarly activities, cultivating a strong culture of inquiry, innovation, and evidence-based practice within the institution.
